This month, as
part of the Southampton winter festival, a mass carnival
parade was held in the City Centre.
The theme for the night carnival was ‘Carnival Destinations'
previewing the many exotic locations, new ocean liner,
Queen Victoria, will visit on her travels including; St
Lucia, Brazil , India and Venice. |

Community Involvement
The Thornhill
Carnival Training Project and TWICS (Training for Work
in Communities Southampton), offer OCN accredited training
courses for community groups and have received £70,000
from Thornhill Plus You to run courses in Thornhill
and across the city. Leading each section of the carnival
this year will be elaborate section leader costumes,
which have been made by local people training for a
NCFE qualification in carnival arts with the Thornhill
Carnival Training Project. |

Local
School Involvement
There is a
Thornhill creative schools project funded by Creative
Partnerships, providing teacher training in carnival
arts as part of the creative curriculum. In this instant
Thornhill Primary schools are learning about different
countries through carnival arts.
Schools participating in the Winter Carnival were; Thornhill
Primary, Kanes Hill, Bassett Green School and Woodlands
Community College. |

The Southampton
Carnival Collective is a new group with the objective
of reviving the city carnival and celebrating community
cohesion and family learning through the medium of carnival
arts. |
