THORNHILL PLUS YOU'S CHAIRPERSON IS AWARDED FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE NEW DEAL FOR COMMUNITIES PROGRAMME

Thornhill Plus You's Board Chairperson and local resident, Debbie King , has been honoured with a community fellowship by Southampton Solent University . Debbie was presented with her award, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the community by Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governors, Professor Glyn Tonge at the University's Graduate Dinner.

The ‘Community Fellowship' is awarded on an annual basis to individuals who, in the opinion of the University, have made an outstanding contribution to the development of the City and community of Southampton , with particular regard to social cohesion and harmony.

Debbie has been Chairperson of Thornhill Plus You, Southampton 's New Deal for Communities, for more than five years and has been instrumental in leading the Thornhill project from its initial bidding phase, through to its current position of considerable improvement. Having lived in Thornhill for thirty eight years, Debbie is incredibly knowledgeable about the area, its residents and the issues they face. Her opinion is sought by citizens and professionals alike, at both a local and national level.

Debbie King commented: "I see this as an award, not for my work, but for the work of all those in Southampton who contribute to the wellbeing of our City. I would not do this without the support of my family, and as important, my colleagues at Thornhill Plus You. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for this support."

Professor Glyn Tonge commented: “ Southampton Solent University has enjoyed a long-standing and mutually supportive relationship with the Thornhill area of Southampton since it was chosen as a site for regeneration in 1999. We have been actively involved in a number of Thornhill Plus You projects in relation to education, employment and enterprise and regeneration evaluation. It is through this initiative that we became aware of Debbie's tireless work, and of her very great achievements.”

Notes for editors:

  1. In recognition of her work, Debbie has been voted onto the Local Strategic Partnership and she also represents Thornhill at the East Partnerships meetings, and her skills and experience have recently been recognised through her election onto the national NDC network's management committee.
  2. Debbie's involvement in all of these remarkable activities is entirely voluntary, on top of a part-time role as a Locality Family Worker for the Primary Care Trust and, with the help of her husband, raising her three sons. She also finds time to be a parent governor at one of Thornhill's three primary schools.
