Your Health, Your Community, Your Vote


On Saturday, 20 March 2010 Thornhill residents voted on how £100,000 in health funding should be allocated in the community.

Thanks to everyone who were involved in this year’s ‘Your Health, Your Community, Your Vote’ participatory budgeting event, which took place on Saturday, 20 March at Thornhill Baptist Church. Participation increased on last year with 73 voting residents deciding on which health and wellbeing projects should be successfully awarded funding.

All 25 applications submitted were worthy of funding and competition was very tight. The £100,000 on offer was shared between 19 projects, 13 of whom were from local community groups. The successful projects were:

Funding to establish outdoor gym equipment on Hinkler Green.

Funding to provide courses for young people in Thornhill to learn how to build a bike.

Thornhill Reducing Isolation Project volunteer expenses
Funding to help pay for the cost of volunteers to support the Thornhill Reducing Isolation Project outings.

Opportunities to Succeed (Thornhill Guides)
Funding for Guides to take part in activities at camp as well as subsidise the cost of a camping expedition to the Isle of Wight.

Mat Attack (Southampton Samurai Judo Club)
Funding to buy new judo mats and suits for temporary use by new members to the club.

Funding to provide various activities for young people in the school holidays including Saints Soccer Club, gymnastics and cheerleading workshops.

Grow it, share it, eat it (Groundwork Solent)
Funding to establish and run a community allotment for tenants and residents of Thornhill.

Kanes Hill Olympic Stars (Friends of Kanes Hill Primary School)
Funding to provide after school sports activities including tennis, gymnastics, football, athletics and volleyball.

Thornhill Dance Club (Plus You Enterprises)
Funding to set up a weekly dance club in Thornhill for all age groups to learn ballroom, line dancing, sequence dance, salsa and more.

Thornhill Crafty Crafters
Funding for monthly visits by tutors to learn new skills, buying craft CD's for members to use at home and provide transport to local craft shops.

Thursday Club (Thornhill Health and Wellbeing Network)
Funding for transport and room hire for the group.

Community Foot Health (New Community Health)
Funding to offer Thornhill residents access to a podiatrist in Thornhill to provide treatments such as nail cutting, corn and callous removal, advice and treatment on verrucas and general foot care.

Chair Exercises (Thornhill Health and Wellbeing Network)
Funding to set up twice weekly physical activity session based at Medwall court for older people.

Thornhill ADHD Group (Thornhill Community Association)
Funding to set up a parent led monthly support group for parents of children diagnosed with ADHD and to provide training and subsidised trips to ADHD family friendly venues.

Dare to Care 2 (No Limits)
Funding to deliver 20 sessions of information and support on health issues to 70 young people a year in Thornhill. Issues covered include drugs and alcohol, sexual health, relationships and emotional wellbeing.

£4909.55 a year for three years

Challenge Thornhill (Thornhill Community Association)
Funding for Soco to deliver weekly workshops of exciting and engaging music based activities for the young people in Thornhill.

OK Parents (Southampton Community Family Trust)
Funding to run 'time out from anger' and 'helping your child do well' courses for parents in Thornhill.

The Star Project
Funding to deliver sessions in Kanes Hill and Hightown Primary School's for young people in Thornhill about healthy relationships, as well as sessions at Woodlands School on being internet safe.

£5208 a year for three years
