Thornhill health and Wellbeing Network (THAWN), supported by Thornhill Health and Wellbeing Project have successfully bid for money, from the PCT Community Health Fund, to run a Leg Club in Thornhill.
Leg Clubs are a national charitable network with the aim of encouraging people with any problems involving legs from varicose vein, skin tears, eczema and ulcers to difficulty in walking to get out and meet others in a similar position. Instead of waiting at home for treatment from a district nurse, residents can now attend the social club, have a cup of tea or coffee, chat with friends old and new AND have their wounds dressed by trained nurses. Transport will be provided, if required, and it is hoped that organisations such as the SCPCT Podiatry Service will have sessions.
The sessions are run on a drop in basis and no appointment is necessary. For many people suffering with swollen legs and/or leg ulcers pain, infection, immobility, loneliness and isolation are everyday problems and it has been proven that a leg club can make a difference to people’s lives.
The THAWN Leg Club starts on Thursday 20th September 2007 at the Natterbox, Hinkler Parade Shops, and will run from 1pm to 4.30pm. All are welcome. For further details or to book transport, which is wheelchair accessible phone 02380 437169.
Janice Stanley, committee member says “We at THAWN are very excited because this is the first leg club run in a city and by a community. Personally I know of one person living in Thornhill who died of a leg ulcer and hopefully this will not happen again.”
