The Thornhill Time Machine The Thornhill Time Machine is a new volunteering initiative that lets registered volunteers donate their skills and services to the benefit of others living in the Thornhill area.
In return, volunteers ‘bank’ the number of hours’ service they give, which they can then ‘spend’ themselves to receive skills and services from other registered volunteers.
The Time Machine was recently officially launched by former TV character ‘The Doctor’, alias Colin Baker from the BBC series 'Dr Who'. Donning his familiar Doctor’s outfit, Colin launched the Thornhill Time Machine in front of 100 invited guests, at St Christopher’s Church Hall in Pepys Avenue.
Said Colin, “I was thrilled
to have been asked to launch this exciting new volunteering
service in Southampton. I hope that many of Thornhill’s
residents will be able to benefit from the time that others
are prepared to give.” Michelle
Gray, a Thornhill resident added, “The Thornhill Time
Machine provides many benefits for local residents. For some
volunteers it helps them build their self-confidence and self-esteem,
whilst for other volunteers it can lead to paid employment,
as the scheme can provide formal references to prospective
employers. I am really looking forward to this new service
and hope that, together with all the other programmes and
projects happening in Thornhill, the Thornhill Time Machine
goes some way to putting the unity back into our community.” Thornhill Plus You's Su Mihelic said, "The Thornhill Plus You programme is all about helping local people develop a new future for themselves and their community."
The Thornhill
Time Machine is funded by Thornhill Plus You and Business
in the Community, and is based at the Eastpoint Centre in
Thornhill. Thornhill
Plus You is keen to recruit volunteers. Residents can register
their interest in becoming a volunteer by ringing freephone
0800 169 5561 during office hours, or by emailing gclifford@eastpointcentre.co.uk.
Further information can be found at the Time Machine’s official website, www.thornhilltimemachine.org.uk, which will officially launch later in the year.
