Playways

The Playways project will provide Thornhill children with access to high quality, outdoor play opportunities.

Six sites across Thornhill - Hinkler Green, Lydgate Green, Thornhill Park , Hannay Rise, Burke Drive Route and Dumbleton Park - will benefit from the new play facilities. The designs for the Playways project will consider the locations in which the play spaces exist, encouraging natural play through a mix of equipment and landscaping and challenging and stimulating children physically in an outdoor environment.

Thornhill Plus You are overseeing the management of the project on behalf of Southampton City Council's Play Services. The project has received funding of £300,000 from the Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) through the Playbuilder programme and £225,000 by Thornhill Plus You (New Deal for Communities).

Children, young people and parents of Thornhill have been engaged throughout the consultation process at various children focused events, play days and at local schools and youth centres . Their feedback has helped shape the designs of the play spaces, which were produced by Capita, with support from Groundwork Solent.

The work started (though not simultaneously) on Monday, 26 January and are scheduled to be completed by Tuesday, 31 March.

The 4 play sites are:

  • Hannay Rise (a new play area)
  • Lydgate Green (improvements and additions to the existing play area)
  • Hinkler Green (improvements and additions to the existing play area)
  • Dumbleton Park (a new play area behind the Dumbleton Towers car park, next to the off-road bike track)

Works on two other play sites are already underway. These are:

  • Thornhill Park (a woodland area between Masefield Green, Thornhill Park Road , Byron Road and Browning Avenue )
  • New play space to be created as part of the Better Neighbourhood project between the 8 walk-up blocks in Gerard Crescent , Byron Road and Burke Drive .

These 2 play sites are scheduled for completion by the end of February.
