The Hinkler Green Skate Park was opened in 2005, a first response to requests from the community for new play opportunities in the area. The facility was recently improved through the addition of a new fence between the play area and skate park.
On September 26th 2006 work began on the second stage of improvements to Hinkler Green. New paths, lighting, bins, seating and a shelter would be provided, in addition to Thornhill's first Multi Use Games Area. It was opened on 15th February 2007 by the Mayor of Southampton and Thornhill's Citizen of the Year, Jim Dowdall.
The work was been funded by Thornhill Plus You, supported by additional funding from Southampton City Council and the Football Foundation.

The Multi Use Games Area is hard to miss, measuring 37m x 18m with a 4m high fence. Lots of activities are planned to take place there
