Play Space
“Play means what children and young people do when they follow their own ideas and interests, in their own way and for their own reasons."
'Getting Serious About Play' published in 2004, commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport.
The opportunity to play is vital to young people to allow them to develop physically and socially. Whilst Thornhill benefits from green open spaces it lacks accessible, safe and inspiring places to play.
In July 2006 Parklife began a study into play in Thornhill, looking not just at facilities but also finding out where young people actually play. This study suggested a range of possible play opportunities across Thornhill, and the areas identified are shown on this map. View the online project map here.
To turn the ideas into reality we need your input to make sure the right opportunities are created to allow play in Thornhill. We want residents, especially young people, to get involved in designing the facilities you want to see us develop. Please get in touch with us by clicking here – you can ask for details of future meetings, request further information or give us your comments, ideas and suggestions on the areas shown.

Greenways
The Greenways part of the project will develop safe, green routes to move around the Thornhill area and access areas such as Hannay Rise, Lydgate Green, Hinkler Green, Dumbleton's Copse and Donkey Common. It aims to make the most of Thornhill's green spaces to encourage residents to walk and cycle around the area and enjoy safe, clean and accessible open spaces.
Parklife identified these routes through a study carried out during the autumn of 2006, and these are also shown on the interactive project map.
