| The Better Homes
improvement project has given 1,839 Southampton City Council
properties and communical areas a makeover.
The project, which
was carried out through a partnership between Southampton
City Council and Thornhill Plus You, began in 2004 and was
completed in October 2008.
Through the Better
Homes project Southampton City Council tenants in Thornhill
received new kitchens, new bathrooms and rewiring. The communial
areas within walk-up blocks received security intercom systems,
anit-vandal glazing and were redecorated. The work was carried
out by MITIE Property Services.
The improvements
have gone beyond the Decent Homes standard which the Government
has tasked local authorities to attain for each of its properties
by 2011.
Unlike other refurbishment
projects the residents of Thornhill had the opportunity to
state whether or not they wanted the refurbishments; they
had over 1,000 combinations of products to choose from for
a kitchen and bathroom they would be satisfied with, and they
were able to voice issues at site meetings.
The project still
has to finish some properties that need disabled adaptations.
