NEW COMMUNITY PROJECTS FOR THORNHILL!
Supported by the Community Chest
On Wednesday 16th May 2007 a panel of resident volunteers met to consider applications from community groups in Thornhill for Community Chest grants.

Fairfax Community Project
The neighbourly residents at Fairfax Court have won a Community Chest grant to pay for two new outdoor seating areas for their residents to enjoy the fresh air and each other’s company. The benches will be made of 100% recycled UK waste and are designed to be easy for the less-physically-able to sit on. |
Friends of Thornhill Primary School
Having asked pupils at the school where they would like to go on a day trip in the summer, this active Parents’ and Teachers’ Association has been awarded funding to go towards the costs of the trip, making it more affordable for families at the school.

Thornhill Crafty Crafters
This bubbly group just love making beautiful cards and firm friends at their Thursday morning craft sessions. Thanks to the Community Chest they can stock up on craft materials and hire a tutor to help them try new things and get even more people to come along. |
Crazy Thornhill Carnival
Eager to add to their collection of trophies from touring last year, the Crazy Thornhill Carnival has won a grant to make more fantastic costumes and go to five carnivals in the region, showing off their talent and teaching new people skills in carnival arts. |

Pride in Our Block
This group of residents on Lydgate Road really do take pride in their block - the people in it and the way it looks. By working together the group has successfully got funding to furnish their balconies with new window boxes, supplied by Mayfield Nurseries, a Solent Mind mental health project in Woolston. |
Kanes Hill Preschool
The children attending this thriving preschool will soon benefit from lots of fun and educational new electronic toys and climbing equipment, along with new tables, chairs and mats to make sure that they can play safely. |

Tumble ‘n’ Tunes
Based in the Reema block at Thornhill Primary School, Thornhill Tumble ‘n’ Tunes provides a great opportunity for parents and toddlers to enjoy soft play together on Thursday mornings. As the Reema block is going to be demolished to make way for a new Children’s Centre, the Community Chest grant will support the group by paying for storage space for their play equipment so that they can continue their sessions while they’re waiting for the new centre to be built. |
St Christopher’s Church
This busy community facility will soon have 14 sparkly new GoPak tables for all of the groups that use the church to enjoy, along with a trolley to wheel them around on.
 |
3rd Thornhill Guides
Brand new to Thornhill, the 3rd Thornhill Guides has recently started for girls aged 10-15 years to take part in all sorts of fun activities. This grant will go towards making their first ever summer camp a huge success. |
Did you know?
Children in Reception year receive a free carton of milk every day at school up until their 5th birthday, when they are not given it any more. This means that every week more and more children have to watch their classmates enjoying yummy, healthy milk while they go without. The Community Chest Panel would like to thank the staff and Friends of Thornhill Primary School for bringing this unfair situation to their attention.

They have awarded them funding to pay for milk for those children in Reception who have turned five until the end of the school year, and Thornhill Plus You are hoping to find a way to extend this to all three Thornhill schools in the future. |
