Projects funded by the Community Chest in the past:
Autumn 2006 Awards
 |
Thornhill Youth Centre
Thornhill Youth Centre was awarded funding for an After School Homework and Activities Club. This will mean that the youth centre will be open between the end of school and evening sessions twice a week for young people to develop social skills, complete homework with access to the online computer suite, and pursue alternative educational qualifications. The grant will pay for activity equipment, the cost of trips, PCV training for a youth worker to pick young people up from school in the minibus, and the extra costs that will come from opening the building up. |
Medwall Court Social Club
This vibrant social club for Thornhill’s senior citizens runs all sorts of activities including coffee mornings, bingo, fish and chips, art and craft, trips and lunch clubs. Having just been beautifully refurbished, the social club as received a Community Chest grant for some new blinds and crockery. One club member said “I am very impressed with the decoration and refurbishment that the Council has just done, but I do feel new blinds at the windows would make the job complete.” Another commented “The club is like a second home to me,” which just goes to show how valuable it is to the many visitors each week. |

Ellwood Sheltered Housing
The keen gardeners at Ellwood Sheltered Housing have already won awards from Thornhill in Bloom and the Tidy Team for their beautiful communal gardens. Now they have got together with the Federation Of Southampton Tenants’ Associations and Residents’ Associations (FOSTARA) and achieved funding for some new gardening equipment that will be shared by the residents’ group.

Southampton ReCycle Project
This exciting new project is working with young people across Thornhill, providing them with basic bike maintenance skills. The project recycles old bikes, which are given to young people to work on through the six sessions under expert supervision. At the end of the course they take a cycling proficiency test, and can keep their refurbished bike for cheap, green, healthy transport and independence. The grant will provide the equipment and training needed to get this project up and running, and pay for 100 young people to take part. |

Burgoyne 60+
In summer 2006 Burgoyne 60+ were successful in receiving funding for a brand new bench to be added to their communal gardens. A number of residents put a great deal of effort into producing beautiful gardens, and now more members will be able to enjoy the open space and social opportunities that their garden has to offer.

Pre-2006
Crazy Thornhill Carnival
As part of the 2004 annual Thornhill Festival of Fun, the Thornhill Activities and Festival Team used a Community Chest grant to partly fund a carnival parade and show. Before the parade, people were taught the art of costume making and design at a series of public workshops, where they also perfected their art and craft skills. The Carnival has continued to be successful and is now independently setting up an NVQ scheme. |

Young DJs Pick Up Community Chest Award
In February two budding young DJs became the youngest people from Thornhill to be awarded a grant from the Community Chest programme. Awards are normally applied for by adults, but Dominic Ginley-Hine and Duane Tobin are both just 12 years old. The boys had to present their idea to a panel made up of Thornhill Plus You board members and Thornhill residents. The money awarded by the panel was used to buy equipment and training so that the boys could DJ at events including the regular SNAP (Say No And Phone) discos.
