Your Health, Your Community, Your Vote

The event which allows Thornhill residents to vote for how they would like to see health and wellbeing funding spent in the community returns again on Saturday, 11 July, 2p.m. at Thornhill Primary School.

During May and June community groups, not-for-profit organisations and statuary agencies were invited to apply for funding from the Thornhill Community Health Fund, for health and wellbeing related activities that would benefit Thornhill. Groups submitted bids ranging from £500 - £10,000 for the costs of the project.

These organisations will now pitch their project ideas at the Your Health, Your Community, Your Vote event and based on these presentation residents will vote for the idea they like the most.

All Thornhill residents are welcome to attend and there will be a £5 Co-op voucher for the first 50 who register (and vote!). Voters must be 12-years or over. There will also be entertainment, refreshments and a prize draw. Registration opens at 1.30 p.m.

Celebrations for Phase 1 and the begining of Phase 2 of the Better Neighbourhood.

The residents of the walk-up blocks in Byron Road, Burke Drive and Gerard Crescent celebrated the completion of the work to improve the external environment of their properties during two events organised by the Better Neighbourhood project team.

During the events residents were treated to lunch and family activities provided by Southampton City Council, Mayfield Nursery, SureStart and the Thornhill Tidy Team, with help from the Junior Neighbourhood Wardens. Residents were also offered gardening advice and seeds, compost and pots to encourage them to start planting on their balconies and patios.

With Phase 1 complete, Phase 2 of the external improvements is now underway and Graham Moyse Contractors Ltd are again undertaking the work. This section of the works will see improvements to properties in Lydgate Road, Lydgate Close, Herrick Close, Warburton Road (just 101-159), Burgoyne Road, Tunstall Road, Baxter Close and Chettle Road.

For further information about the project please contact Paul Howard, Project Manager on 023 8083 2072 or paul.howard@southampton.gov.uk.

The Thornhill Bus Users Group celebrate change to bus route

The Thornhill Bus Users Group is celebrating its latest achievement after the First Group announced that as of July it will be extending its number 9 route to improve access up and down Warburton Road.

From Sunday, 26 July the number 9 service, which comes along Hinkler Road from Harefield, will now loop up Warburton Road, Tunstall Road, Burgoyne Road and back down Warburton Road every 20 minutes.

This latest victory comes after The Thornhill Bus Users Group had talks with a representative from the First Group about how difficult residents, particularly those with disabilities, children or are elderly, were finding it to get up and down Warburton Road, which is a main route into the estate and is on a steep incline.

The Thornhill Bus Users Group is a group of local residents who regularly meet with representatives from the two local bus companies, First group and Bluestar, and a representative from Southampton City Council, to ensure that Thornhill is provided with a bus service that meets the needs of the community. Bus services are vital in Thornhill as residents rely on them on a daily basis to travel around Thornhill and in to Southampton.

The positive change to the number 9 service is excellent news for Thornhill and shows that when residents pull together for the greater good of the community they really can make a difference. Celebration of new play sites on Thornhill.

The virtual completion of six newly refurbished play sites in Thornhill was marked in a special celebration on Friday, 17 April at Lydgate Green.

The project to improve the play sites across Thornhill was funded by The Department of Children, Schools and Families (as part of the play builder programme) and Thornhill Plus You.

Children, young people and parents of Thornhill have all been involved with the development of the proposals for all the play areas. Their feedback helped to shape the final designs, which was produced by Capita with support from Groundwork Solent.

The project has provided the children of Thornhill with greater outdoor play opportunities that are free and fun and encourage natural play. The event on the 17 April was a special celebration to praise everyone for all their hard work in delivering the fantastic new play facilities.

John Denham, the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills officially opened the play area at Lydgate Green, with a little help from the many children who were there enjoying the new play equipment.

The other play sites are located on Hinkler Green, Thornhill Park, Burke Drive, Hannay Rise and Dumbleton Park.
